Report by Richard Geno
Our second largest audience in Conservative Forum history witnessed a truly great presentation made by Victor Davis Hanson in May. Over 400 people made their way to Mountain View to hear a true scholar discuss everything from the Obama White House to Middle East policy. Since our meeting came on the heels of the killing of Osama bin Laden, Dr. Hanson pointed out that the Obama administration used every tool developed and all of the evidence gathered by the Bush administration to find and kill Osama bin Laden.
The Obama administration used the apparatus of wiretapping and predator drones to find Osama. The Obama administration has continued to keep Guantanamo open, and is using military tribunals. They used the evidence and information gathered by the enhanced interrogation techniques practiced by the Bush administration.
Victor Davis Hanson uses the term "Post-Modern" policy to define Obama's approach towards things. He indicated that when he is asked about President Obama's foreign policy, he indicates that it is "totally incoherent."
Dr. Hanson indicated that the 21-22 countries in the Middle East are all in some stage of unrest. He pointed out that something is happening in the Middle East that is not happening in the rest of the world. The chaos is caused by tribalism, gender apartheid, religious intolerance and the legacy of Soviet influence.
All of the unrest is not necessarily favorable to America. We do not know the nature of the people in these countries. Dr. Hanson suggested that we should only support those groups who propose a constitutional government. He pointed out that Obama's handling of Libya was typical of his approach towards everything. He only eventually did something in Libya based on the insistence of Susan Rice, Hillary Clinton and Samantha Power. Even then, we entered into Libya with no direction, no mission and no plan to end the Gaddafi regime.
The only thing that one can conclude is that Obama's Post Modern policy is a combination of confusion and obfuscation. There are five observations Victor Davis Hanson has made regarding the Obama foreign policy:
1. To the extent your country is democratic (ie, Israel, Iraq), Obama does not like you.
2. If you are totalitarian and anti-American, and you forbid an international press (ie, Iran, Syria), he likes you.
3. If you are authoritarian and pro-American, he doesn't like you.
4. If you have nuclear weapons, that is a good thing.
5. If you have oil, that is a very good thing.
When asked how Obama got elected, he indicated that it was the "perfect storm." He pointed out that it had been 50 years since the United States elected a northern liberal president. There had been Democrats - Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton - but they all were from the south. The ABC's of Obama's election are as follows:
A. For the first time since 1952, there was no incumbent president or vice-president running for president.
B. At no time had the media ever treated a presidential candidate like an annointed "god." There was literally no scrutiny.
C. Dr. Hanson felt that GOP nominee John McCain actually wanted to be the first presidential candidate to lose to the first African-American president.
D. The financial meltdown of September 14-15-16.
E. Many Americans wanted to establish a landmark result by electing an African-American president.
Victor Davis Hanson indicated that the upcoming 2012 presidential election will be a watershed election. The Obama administration has established the policy of providing equality of results in the United States. They have determined that peole who make a certain level of income do not deserve it. The country will be deciding in 2012 whether or not we are going to move forward with that philosophy, or return to constitutional free markets, and once again become a country of laws and freedom.
