Chinese Girl In The Ghetto – Power and Enterprise of the Human Spirit
Report by Betty Sakai
(Ying Ma brought C-SPAN with her to tape a Book-TV review. It is expected to be broadcast the weekend of June 15-16th but check the schedule at http://booktv.org/)
The power and enterprise of the human spirit is what Ying Ma presented to a welcoming Forum audience June 4th. Promoting her book, Chinese Girl In TheGhetto, Ying Ma detailed the odds stacked against her family as they legally immigrated into the United States when she was in 4th grade. She said she thought the streets of America were lined with gold, her expectations shattered when her parents moved into a ghetto in Oakland CA where they encountered much prejudice, homelessness, and violence. As a family they worked together to rise out of poverty. Living poor in America without the debilitating restraints of living in a Communist country where government opposes the free market is preferable Ying said to living one’s whole life controlled and in mediocrity.
