COMMUNITY ACTIVISM
CFSV Exhibits at San Jose Gun Show-April 2007
Members of The Conservative Forum are encouraged to get involved and make a difference in the community. Some of our current action groups include:

Media Committee
Our Media Committee watches and observes the mainstream media, especially the San Jose Mercury News. We have met with the news department and the editorial chief in an effort to have the paper present as balanced approach to the news as possible. We have pointed out to the editor of the paper the different ways – some subtle and some not-so-subtle – that the media demonstrates a liberal bias. We have encouraged the editorial chief to provide more ideological balance among their columnists and letters to the editor. Read about:

Bay Area Campus Outreach Program
Our Bay Area College Outreach Program (BACORP) assists students on college and high school campuses to organize an independent, non-partisan conservative organization. In addition to helping establish a place where one can fortify his or her conservative thoughts, we seek to obtain quality, balanced and objective teaching that encourages diversity of thought on the respective campuses.
Book Review Group
Our Book Review section is dedicated to book reviews on newly-released conservative books. The reports are presented in a fast-paced fifteen minutes at our monthly meeting, and then a written summary is posted on our website. Our purpose is to encourage the readership of conservative books and literature while also providing members the opportunity to get an overview of conservative thought.
Discussion Boards
The goal of the Discussion Board committee is to develop a format for debating issues. Current techniques fail in a multitude of ways. Formal debates depend on the speaking ability of the participants and favor those capable of thinking on their feet, whether the thoughts are logical or not. The Fox News format usually ends up with a lot of yelling, but little information is uncovered and communicated. Group meetings end up with a number of off-hand comments with little basis in facts or research. Logic is scarce.

| Conservative Forum Member, Peter Soule, Speaks Out |
Our goal will be to develop techniques to overcome these limitations so that the participants come away with more knowledge and understanding, perhaps changing their mind in the process. Some ideas to try are combinations of face-to-face discussions among small groups together with written email discussions. Participants may be asked to research certain aspects of an issue and report back to the group. In the beginning, the groups will be composed of conservatives who may have different views on a subject; but later, the goal is to incorporate liberals as well. The ultimate goal is a better understanding of issues by people of all political persuasions.
Legislative Committee
Someone has to keep tabs on our elected representatives! Jack Ward’s committee monitors legislation and political activities in Washington, Sacramento, and in our local counties and cities. When action is needed, The Conservative Forum members are alerted.

Writers Group
The best way to combat the liberal media is to get letters to the editor printed in the local media. Our Writers Group, lead by Keith De Filippis, has been very successful in getting conservative opinions in local newspapers.
